Beach volleyball is designed to be a best of 3 format. The games go to 21 points instead of the 25 points used in indoor volleyball. The winning team has to lead by 2 points to win the set and there’s no limit. So the first team to lead by 2 after a total of 21, wins the set.
In indoor volleyball, the games are played to a total of 25 points for each set except the tie-breaker set. This final set will be played to 15 points. But again, regardless of what the total is supposed to be, if you’re not winning by at least 2 points, the game will continue.
The deciding set which is the 3rd set in a best-of-three game format, or the 5th set in a best-of-five game format; is won by the team to first achieve 15 points, also with a minimum lead of 2 points. The team that wins 2 out of 3 sets, will win the match in a best-of-three game format.
In 2008, the NCAA changed the minimum number of points needed to win any of the first four sets from 30 to 25 for women's volleyball (men's volleyball remained at 30 for another three years, switching to 25 in 2011). If a fifth (deciding) set is reached, the minimum required score remains at 15.
In indoor volleyball, teams need 25 points to win the regular sets in a volleyball match. In a tie-breaker set, the players will only need to get 15 points to win the set. In beach volleyball, teams need 21 points in the first 2 sets, but 15 points for the tie-breaker.
In volleyball, most games are played to 25 points. The first team to 25 points wins a game. If the score is tied 24-24, it's the team that get's a two point advantage first that wins. Basically, you must win by two points. A game is referred to as a set.
An indoor volleyball match is the best of five games. The team who takes the majority (three games) is the overall winner of the match. For beach volleyball, it’s best of three. To win a game, a team must score 25 points with a two-point difference.
